The most current social issue is that Newark, NJ has laid off 167 police officials on November 30th of 2010. This was 14% of the police working for Newark. They were discharged from several precincts within Newark. The contrast between these two districts grows more disturbing when considered through the lens of racial equality. While SAISD’s population is 98% minority, the Anglo population in Alamo Heights totals slightly over 55%. He wrote this in the Elizabethan period when Queen Elizabeth I ruled England but the exact date is unknown. At this time plays and puns (word play) were common as they were the only form of entertainment. Like all other plays at this time Shakespeares had no female actors. It was seen to be inappropriate for a lady to act, therefore male actors were used instead and had to play the parts of women as well as men. Shakespeare was influenced by other writers; for his Romeo and Juliet play he used an old Italian tale called The Tragicall History of Roemeus and Juliet, written by Arthur Brooke. In this play Juliet was sixteen but Shakespeare decided to reduce her age to thirteen although it was unusual for a girl of this age to get married. In Romeo and Juliet Juliet is forced to have an arranged marriage but she has already fallen in love with Romeo. At the time Romeo and Juliet was written, arranged marriages were common between families of the same social status. To refuse to get married would be an insult and an embarrassment on your family. Baz Luhrmann tries to modernise Shakespeares play a lot. He does this so his new audience can relate to certain things in the play as being believable. For example in Luhrmanns film he uses a more appropriate age for Juliet. If he were to keep Juliet at thirteen the audience of today would think it was strange and the play just wouldnt work. He also uses modern props like cars and guns. In the original, Shakespeare written play, swords are used as weapons. So that the audience of today can relate to this Baz Luhrmann uses guns with the word Sword written on them. This allows him to use roughly the same script. For example, at the beginning of the film one character says Give me my long sword meaning give me my gun. The story of Romeo and Juliet is set in an Italian city called Verona where two chief families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are sworn enemies. However one day two teenagers, each from opposing families, accidentally meet and immediately fall in love. Their names are Romeo and Juliet. A Capulet called Tybalt later kills Romeos best friend, Mercutio. Romeo chases after him and kills him in revenge. Romeo is then banished from Verona and the only way for them to keep seeing each other is to run away together. To do this Juliet decided to fake her death. She sent a letter to Romeo telling him she was still alive and to come and get her but Romeo never got it. Juliets supposed death was too much for Romeo. He went to Juliets body and poisoned himself leaving Juliet to wake up and find him dead. Juliet couldnt live without him either. Distraught and confused she too killed herself. The death of these two lovers ended the Montague and Capulets rivalry and proved that true love could not be changed. Romeo and Juliet starts with a prologue. A prologue introduces a play, poem or novel before the main piece begins. In the Elizabethan period, when Romeo and Juliet was written, the prologue was read out to calm the audience down and make them ready to watch the play. The prologue of this play is written in the form of a sonnet. Sonnets are a rhyming piece that has fourteen lines and follows a unique rhythm (a b a b c d c d e f e f g g). Its metre is called Iambic Pentameter. Just like the one in the prologue, sonnets are usually poems about love. The sonnet in Romeo and Juliet tells the audience what is going to happen in the end. The purpose of this is not to give away the story but to make the audience want to watch on. In Baz Luhrmanns film version he uses a TV report to show whats going to happen. I am going to explore how Shakespeare uses language to convey the relationship between Romeo and Juliet in his play Romeo and Juliet and how Baz Luhrmann represents this in his film version. I am also going to look at how Shakespeare uses different techniques to display this. At the end of Act 1 Scene 4 Romeo is talking to Mercutio. He talks about how he can sense something bad is going to happen and mentions his future death. He says Some consequence yet hanging in the stars; He is talking about astrology and how the stars are showing him his fate. Astrology was very popular at the time this play was written and Shakespeare uses the idea a lot in his plays. By Romeo saying By some vile forfeit of untimely death shows that he can tell his death will come. The next thing he says is But He that hath the steerage of my course direct my sail! we know that he is referring to God because Shakespeare uses a capital H. He is saying that God controls what is going to happen to him and when he says Direct my sail! he is asking God to direct him to his fate. Religion was an important part of life in the Elizabethan period. Shakespeare uses religious phrases and ideas throughout Romeo and Juliet. Remarkable changes EssayBaz Luhrmann however, interprets this scene very differently in his film. Juliet comes down the balcony and walks alongside her swimming pool. This prop is used in the same way as the fish tank. Its relaxing colour and soft waves make the moment more romantic. When Romeo appears from the darkness Juliet screams and the two of them fall in the pool. Luhrmann then introduces all new parts and props into the play. A security guard is shown, watching Juliet on the CCTV. The guard hears her scream and comes out to check on her. At this moment Romeo hides beneath the water until the guard has gone. This is another way that Luhrmann uses new props to modernise the play. In Act 3 Scene 5 Romeo and Juliet are on the balcony. Romeo talks of how he must go but Juliet tries to persuade him to stay. She eventually wins the persuasion but Romeo is forced to leave when Juliets nurse enters the room. Juliet says to Romeo Some say the lark and loathed toad changed eyes; O now I would they had changed voices too. There was a myth that the toad and lark had exchanged eyes but Juliet is saying to Romeo that they should have changed voices instead because the horrible crouch of a toad is more suited to the lark that separates them. At this point the nurse enters and Romeo is forced to leave in a hurry. Baz Luhrmann uses props and colours to make the moment feel more romantic. His choice of prop in this scene is a white bed sheet, which is wrapped around Romeo and Juliet. The white sheet is put over their heads so it is like no one is there but them. The sheet blocks out the rest of the world and makes the moment more emotional. Baz Luhrmann decided to cut part of the script out to make it shorter. With the use of the white sheet less speech is needed. Luhrmann does this a lot in his film. He replaces dialog with props and colours. Act 5 Scene 3 is the scene in which Romeo and Juliet kill themselves in confusion. When Romeo finds out Juliet is dead, he decides to poison himself, as he cannot live without her. Before doing so he says Will I set up my everlasting rest. By saying this he is asking whether it will be is full and final commitment. He conducts a long speech in which he speaks his final words. Before drinking down the poison he say Heres to my love! which means he is doing this for her. Juliet then wakes to find Romeos body. Devastated she says a small speech in which she says Haply some poison yet doth hang on, to make me die with a restorative. Thy lips are warm. She is saying that maybe they have been poisoned. By saying that she will die in restorative she is saying that her kiss will cure her life and restore her to Romeo. Romeos speech is much longer than Juliets because he has had more time to grieve and has planned his death whereas Juliet killed herself in panic without thinking before she d id so. At the beginning of this scene Romeo kills Paris. This is cut out from Baz Luhrmanns film so the storyline, of how Romeo and Juliet killed themselves, can be concentrated on. Luhrmann also uses props like candles and a giant church hall. This could not have been done in Shakespeares time. Shakespeare uses a wide range of techniques to convey the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. Metaphors, similes and personifications are all used to show a particular emotion or feeling. Courtly love and religious phrases are also used to express the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare used these techniques to their full potential. Baz Luhrmann also used his own techniques that worked well to produce a wider range of emotions through choices of props and colour.

Imagine you’re at McDonald’s and you’re going in for that bite on your burger. First thing you think about is the tastiness of the burger and not exactly what you’re eating. Little do you know that you’re eating so much stuff that will actually take a toll on your body in the long run? Most Americans do not have this thought running through their minds because all they care about is the explosion of flavor in their mouth and the satisfaction of being full after. Americans should eliminate the regular consumption of fast food because the fast food diet leads to health issues, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Diabetes is a common factor after consuming fast foods (junk food). For those who do not know what diabetes is: Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to properly use and store sugar. Sugar backs up in the bloodstream causing one’s blood sugar to rise too high and fast food is high in sugar even though we do not know it. Even though the fast food may be high in calories, it will lack nutritional value because of the high amount of carbs as well as all the fats. Fast foods are usually high in calories, and highly processed, but they tend to have few vitamins and minerals, and are usually low in fiber. Fast foods often contain large amount of added sugar, and high in saturated fats and Trans fats. Besides diabetes, Americans are highly affected from fast foods in the form of obesity. You can find a fast food restaurant every time you turn the corner and you can choose from burgers, tacos or a sugary drink at most places. As mentioned before: Fast foods are typically high in calories, fat, sugar, carbohydrates, and sodium. I believe the rate of obesity is so high because of how inexpensive it is to buy and also due to multiple locations of fast food restaurants. Obesity is starting to become a major factor in America these days due to all the fast food we consume. In addition to Obesity in America, it is now becoming a big deal to the youth. As said before, most fast food chains lurk around every corner and is  very tempting to the human eye. Along with the location of fast food our lifestyles have changed over the years where we live in a fast paced society. The fast food industry understands this which is why there is a drive through window. You can order something healthier on the fast food menu, but most of the time you are being rushed to order and you make the wrong choice, or because the healthier items on the menu are usually the most expensive. Either way this is what I see when I order from fast food restaurants. Finally, the most serious outcome of consuming fast food in your daily will be heart disease and eventually death. Studies found that consuming fast food as little as once a week increases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease by 20 percent. The risk goes up to 50 percent if you eat fast food two to three times weekly, according to the study. Worse still, the risk shoots to 80 percent for those who eat fast food four or more times per week. The study I found was interesting to me and it had me thinking of my own eating habits. Can you imagine with all the excess carbs, fats, sodium, sugars, and cholesterols being absorbed in your system that it will play a major role on your cardiovascular system? The thought of this was quite stunning and should be taught worldwide to prevent heart disease, which will lead to death. Fast food will always be a favorite meal for anyone that doesn’t have time to cook, on a budget, or just prefers the tastiness of the grease. Down the road if fast food is consumed daily then the effects will be catastrophic on the human body such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.   Ã‚  Ã‚   During the seventeenth century, the art of writing was like uncharted waters for women, in which most who ventured were rendered pathetically unsuccessful.   No matter the quality, publications written by women were typically ridiculed by their male contenders.   However, a handful of women defied the common standards and were prosperous; one of these was Aprha Behn.   Virgina Wolf says of Behn, "All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn, for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds."   Although she was a woman of outstanding accomplishments, one of her publications truly glistens.   Oroonoko (1688), the epic tale of a heroic black slave, has often been dubbed the first modern novel in that it displays qualities utterly matchless for the seventeenth century.    Although one may not realize it, several aspects work harmoniously in constructing the modern novel.   According to Ian Watt, three of these are particularity, unity of design, and rejection of traditional plots.   A novel must focus on specific characters and has to occur in a distinct time frame.   Furthermore, a novel should have a plot unlike others of the era.   One common idea or theme should also rule the work.   All of these characteristics are vividly expressed in Oroonoko.    Particularity, Watt states, is "the amount of attention it [the novel] habitually accords to both the individualism of its characters and to the detailed presentation of their environment."   Behn puts an emphasis on only a few main characters; these being Oroonoko (Caesar), the narrator who is a white mistress, and Imoinda, Oroonoko's love.   The writer goes to great lengths to brilliantly paint a picture of Oroonoko for the readers, ... ...el - distinctiveness, unity of design, and rejection of traditional plots. Proctor et al (1995, p.39) discusses the requirement for planning, and opens with the idea that no planning can take place without a clear idea, on the part of the teacher, of what the children in the class are going to learn.The planning process requires the identification of the learning objectives in detail; in reality, meeting the criteria of the curriculum and even the more detailed key objectives in the teaching strategy will require a series of lessons and usually a return to the subject at a later date. Planning over different time frames allows teachers to meet the desired outcomes and provid e a coherent progression.Long term plans will detail the expectations within a curriculum area over an academic year; these plans will identify themes to be used and the subject areas to be covered they will be expressed in terms of the key concepts that children will need to understand and the knowledge and skills that they should be acquiring. Medium term planning will usually be for a unit of work – generally one item from the program of study – and cover a term or  ½ term. The medium term planning phase is when teachers are required to link the long-term plans to the curriculum key objectives. The medium term plans will outline a series of activities and the approach that is to be taken; these plans are the first level at which the teaching/learning approach is considered and the methods and criterion for assessment are decided. Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) show evidence of any special needs, which may be physical such as poor sight and hearing and any learning difficulties. It will also identify children who have behavioral problems or particularly able and gifted children.IEPs will also show any strategies and teaching approaches used to meet these children's needs. It can also highlight any particular resources that facilitate the children's learning. A previous teacher can provide valuable information on how these strategies and resources were employed and the success or failure of them. It is important to keep in mind when discussing children with other teachers that their views and opinions are unlikely to be impartial. Conversations with parents/carers allow them to raise any issues they have about their interpretations of their children's needs and progress in learning. It can also be useful to look at children's ages to gain a better understanding of the level they are working at.Once this preliminary information has been collected the teacher can plan diagnostic work, which will further identify children's abilities and needs. Teachers should plan broad topic work at a variety of levels where children have a reasonable opportunity of success and which provides some challenges. Teachers must structure learning within their classrooms in order to move each child forward, this can include differentiating appropriately, using appropriate resources and implementing various teaching and learning strategies inclusive of all children.Teaching Strategies Education planning will use a variety of strategies described by Minton (1997, p.117). It is appropriate to use ‘lecture' t o begin the session to explain what is to be covered, to find out how the students have found the work in the previous session so there will be some ‘questions and answers'. There will be a ‘group discussion' as we go through the assignment and this will give the students the opportunity to ask any questions and familiarize themselves with the work. A ‘question and answer' session will follow and then depending on the outcome, there be the opportunity for ‘demonstrations'. The disadvantage of this is that the ‘quiet' students may be reluctant to ask questions , There is need to be aware of this, and perhaps ask those students questions that they can answer to build up their confidence. A lecture strategy is then used to explain the unit assignment, as this is an effective method of broadcasting the information. Then a group discussion will involve teacher and students discussing criteria, this allows everyone to ask questions and give opinions but it may allow ‘loud’ students to dominate the group. Certain time to demonstrate practical work to the students on the computer allows the student to see what the final product should be of any particular exercise and gives them confidence in their own work.Learning Resources For IT classes, for example, a variety of resources are used in the high school. The most common ones used in the IT department are computer-based resources, OHT's and computer generated slides, and printed materials. The most common types of media resource are the PC/projector combination and printed materials , to accompany whiteboard work. In the IT department it is critical that students have individual access to PCs with relevant software installed on them, and also access to a printer to enable them to obtain hard copies of work produced.There is need for a room to seat all students, we do not need PCs for each student in this case, we need them all to see a whiteboard so we can explain the topic we will supply unit assignments in hard copy to every student, including the marking criteria and the moderator's comments. How to Hire an Editor How to Hire an Editor How to Hire an Editor By Mark Nichol You’ve written a novel, or a short-story collection, that you hope to publish yourself in print or online, or perhaps you plan to send it to an agent in the hopes that an editor at a publishing company will consider it. Or perhaps you have, or work for, a business that distributes printed communications, or you’re responsible for a Web site that posts lots of written material. You know the content isn’t ready for prime time. You need an editor. What do you do? Determine the Type of Editing You Want First, clarify what kind of assistance you seek. Does your content need a substantive edit, copyediting, or proofreading? Substantive editing involves intensive attention to plotting, narrative, characterization, tone, and other holistic factors for fiction, and organization, logic, and effective messaging in marketing communications or other nonfiction. If your novel has been rejected for publication or your articles (or someone else’s you’re shepherding) lack the impact they require, you should search for an editor who performs substantive editing. If you believe the content is basically sound, but you believe it needs revision for grammar, usage, style, and punctuation, find a copy editor. If you’re concerned only about typographical errors, hire a proofreader. (But realize this: You can probably get away without a substantive edit, but content that has been proofread but not copyedited is probably substandard.) Identify the Project’s Scope and Schedule Next, consider the parameters of the assignment. Is the project a single book, or a series of essays to be assigned over a matter of weeks, or an ongoing collection of articles for a Web site? Whoever you hire will want to know your time frame. Do you expect the assignment to be returned in weeks, days, or hours? Will it be delivered, and is it to be returned, all at once, or piecemeal? Payment Policy Next, decide how you will compensate the editor. Will you pay by the hour, by the project (a flat fee), or by the page? Most editors work with an hourly rate, which is the fairest and the most effective, because it allows the editor to do their best work. You can, of course, specify a cap on how many hours the editor is allowed to bill for. And how will you pay? By check, or money order? By PayPal, or another online service? Some editors may ask for a percentage of the total payment up front or after you receive a specified proportion of the edited material. You can ask the editor to complete a sample (paid) edit of one chapter or a single article that you evaluate before approving them to complete the assignment. Obtain an Editor Now, where do you find an editor? You can post physical or virtual notes in your area to solicit local teachers or English majors, but though they may be an economical choice, teachers and English majors are not necessarily good editors. You can put projects up for bid on Web sites like Guru.com, but it’s a complicated process, and many editors who offer their services on the site are underqualified or are not proficient in American English or British English. (And if you lowball the rate you’re willing to pay, you’ll get what you paid for.) Employment sites such as Media Bistro are effective for finding media professionals but not so much for obtaining help with fiction projects or small-scale assignments, and posting employment listings can be pricey. Craigslist, however, remains an excellent resource, and job postings cost only $75. (And you needn’t restrict your search to your local market.) In addition, organizations such as the Bay Area Editors’ Forum are appropriate resources for private individuals and smaller businesses and organizations seeking editorial assistance. (Again, it doesn’t necessarily matter where you or a prospective editor live.) Alternatively, many freelance editors advertise their services on their own Web sites. (Once again, geographical location is largely irrelevant.) Consider the Costs Substantive editing is likely to put you back $50 or more per hour, and the typical working rate is several pages per hour. Copy editors charge about $25 to $50 per hour, depending on their level of experience and expertise and on the subject matter, and they generally complete five to ten pages an hour. Proofreading costs less and is accomplished more quickly, but unless the content is online, you’ll have to mail the proofs, send them as a PDF Portable Document File (the editor will need an editing program), or have the proofreader complete the project on site or pick it up and deliver it on completion. (And remember, proofreading without copyediting is a risky shortcut.) As you can see, hiring an editor is an expensive proposition. Engaging even a $25-per-hour copy editor for a 100,000-word novel will cost you about a thousand dollars. An experienced substantive editor could end up billing you a few hundred dollars for helping you craft a 2,500-word article for a specialized publication. Even having some Web pages proofread can easily become a three-figure expenditure. But consider the return on investment: A literary agent is impressed with your tight, cleanly written prose. A periodical accepts your clear, concise, confident technical article. Your typo-free Web site (which your proofreader has also improved with some apt suggestions about format and design) attracts visitors, who may also become customers. It’s nearly impossible to quantify the effect of an editorial professional’s contribution to the impact of any piece of content, and in many cases, the editing you don’t notice is the best kind. In a sense, it’s a leap of faith to hire an editor. There’s no guarantee that employing an editor (even one armed with an impressive resume or glowing testimonials) will result in publication of your content or any other definitive marker of success, and the process of obtaining an editor’s services isn’t effortless even in the best circumstances.
